Business man at the Gym: Your survival guide

Tami Lancut Leibovitz

Working out is important not only for looks and aesthetics but also for our health regime, our blood stream, our metabolism and our overall stress levels.

In recent years, the trend of spending time at the gym is part of the modern businessman's lifestyle.

Just like the business world, the gym is a place filled with emotions, hard work, struggles and determination – make sure you treat your gym partners just as respectfully as you would treat the same people in your business environment.

My book, the IBL Code, provides professional tips doe professional about the International Business Language, here are a taste of those easy-to-follow guidelines:

Always DO:

  1. Always return the weights to their proper place. As simple as it sounds, this simple rule causes conflicts in the gym repeatedly.
  2. People tend to spend excess time on the aerobic equipment, do not be that person! Check and see if after 30 minutes others are waiting in line for it and if someone is, politely move on to another training device.
  3. This one goes without saying: Pay attention to personal hygiene and always wear clean sportswear – save your old dirty sweatpants to your home workouts!
  4. You can’t go wrong if you always bring a personal towel, an antiperspirant spray and a bottle of water with you.

Never DO:

  1. Never adjust the volume of the music and air conditioning or the joined TV channels without asking others for their permission, a simple request can clear the air and prevent arguments.
  2. Never talk Business in the dressing room or on the floor, you never know who can be listening in to your conversation.
  3. Never leave your sweat marks on the fitness equipment, clean them off with your towel and make sure the next user can feel comfortable.
  4. Never talk on your mobile phone, if a business matter is urgent, Text instead!
  5. Never disturb others during their workout with questions or stories, the gym is made for focus and rejuvenation, enjoy that quiet time and let others enjoy it.
  6. Never leave weights and other objects lying around after you use them. It’s dangerous and also quite rude to expect people to clean after you!
  7. Never ask others for shampoo or soap, if you are not prepared for a decent shower, head home to clean off.

A gym lifestyle has become almost must in a career oriented routine, a valuable asset for nurturing a healthy, young and fresh appearance and a rejuvenated, healthy mind!
